As far back as I can remember, my mom taught me how to be resourceful. To use what we had around the house for crafts, daily life, and even snacks. I can remember getting off the school bus after school and coming home to a sweet surprise. She had made me a snack- graham crackers with leftover icing. They were delicious! My husband brags on me that I am pretty skilled at whipping up something from nothing in the kitchen. I owe the credit to her, my mom, Glenda Faye!
What seemed like the norm growing up, I came to find in adulthood was a rarity. Not many people possess the skill to repurpose, to be resourceful and to utilize what they have on hand. I believe that it helps develop creativity, vision and imagination. Well, that and being an only child!!
A great imagination provides the opportunity to see things differently; sometimes an uncanny use for something ordinary. Check out this ordinary everyday outdoor faucet handle.
I love to give old items new life. That was how Dee Dee Style was born- “Giving Old Buttons New Life.” Now it seems to be rolling over to everything I can get my hands on at flea markets or thrift stores! Check out this super cute bag- it was once upon a time a toaster cover!! (I used vintage zippers as the straps!)
This is my first blog in many months. Not because I do not like to write nor did I have anything to share. Rather I found I was not dedicating myself and my life to what I love. I made a choice several months ago to do something that I discovered was the worst decision I have ever made. Yet I discovered along that crooked path what my priorities were, what I missed and what I loved. It gave me the chance to learn many great life lessons and to reflect on what is at my core. I found that it is this…Making Old things New Again! If you know me and I hope if you don’t, that you will begin to follow me over the next several months and discover that I always find a wonderful spiritual undertone to everything in life. So today it is this: 2 Corinthians 5:17 “…The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
Free to be me,
Deidra “Dee Dee” Roe
